Title:   Statue Base
Category:   Architecture Marble
Description:   a) Broken in many pieces and only about half preserved. Simple moldings at top and bottom. Drums smoothly finished; top dressed with claw. Both top and sides fresh and unweathered. Fine, precise work.
b) Small additional fragment.
Cf. notebook p. 3632: "The base had been reused and in its second period had been inverted and a rectangular socket cut in its new top surface" (H.A.T).
Lightly clouded gray marble, probably Hymettian (emits odor when struck).
Completely restored in plaster.

Context:   a) From tower of Late Roman Fortification at S.W. corner of Library of Pantainos; from lowest course of south wall of tower together with A 2969, A 2970, A 2971, A 2972 and A 2973, and fragments A 2891 and A 2892. b) Found among marbles from Late Roman Fortification.
