Mended with small missing pieces restored in plaster and painted, handle B/A completely modern. Glaze flaked slightly on outside. Top of rim reserved. H. 0.103; diam. of rim 0.29; diam. of tondo 0.113; diam. of foot 0.117. S. Roberts, Hesperia 55, 1986, p. 19, cat. no. 27, p. 20, fig. 11, pls. 5, 6 (I, A).

I, nude, youthful jumper to right, a wreath around his head. Along the contour of his back:

retrograde. In front of him:

Uneven reserved line for tondo border. A, fight. A warrior (a bit of torso missing) comes in from the left, spear poised. He wears a Chalcidian helmet, a corslet over a short chiton, and greaves, and he holds out his round shield (device: wreath) on his left arm. His opponent (nude but for Corinthian helmet and greaves) runs away, looking back, his spear held high, his round shield (device: bull's head) held out. A companion, armed similarly, except that his helmet is Chalcidian, comes in to help. His shield device is a dog's hindquarters. Then comes the last pair, a youth in a short chiton rushes in to fight, sword in right hand, left arm with hand fisted outstretched toward his opponent, who falls backward, sword in right hand, shield (overlapped by handle) on left arm seen in profile. He wears a corslet over a short chiton, greaves, and a Chalcidian helmet. Inscribed along rim:

B, arming. Youth striding to right, nude but for a low-crested Corinthian helmet and greaves. In his right hand he holds a spear, pointed downward, on his left arm, a round shield (device: bull's head). The next youth is armed similarly, except that his shield is Boiotian (device: two circles), and he holds his spear at hip level. Behind him is a similar youth with a round shield (device: two circles) to right. The next youth (most of head, shoulders, left arm missing) leans to right, spear held with its point downward, shield (device: probably a bull's head shown frontally) in profile. The last youth wears a cloak and has a round shield (device: bull's head) partly overlapped by the restored handle. He faces to left. Inscribed belowthe rim:

Below the figures, reserved line. Preliminary sketch. Relief contour. Incised line for hair contour. Red (flaked): wreath; inscriptions.

Part resembles Tarquinia RC 1130, in the manner of the Epeleios Painter (ARV2 153, ---; Addenda 180). Compare also these in the painter's manner, only with more robust figures than on 1408: Würzburg 470, side B (ARV2 149, 9); Mainz, Univ. 101 (ARV2 149, 13); Malibu, the J. Paul Getty Museum 86.AE.281, side A (ARV2 149, 15; Paralip. 335, 15; Addenda 179; CVA, The J. Paul Getty Museum 8 [forthcoming]).
