Shoulder fragment with start of neck. Max. dim. 0.05. Choes and Anthesteria, p. 89, cat. no. 222, fig. 368; Burn, Meidias Painter, p. 98, cat. no. M 14, pl. 14:b.

Eros (wreathed head, shoulders, wings, part of arms) flying to right, about to throw the ball or stone he holds in his raised right hand. Above his outstretched left arm is a spiral plant. Behind him, at the lower break, the tips of two leaves, probably a plant. To left of wing, fairly far down:

Above, frieze of upright encircled palmettes with vestigial lotuses. Relief contour. Added clay: spiral plant; cover feathers of each wing; tip of right. White (flaked): inscription.

Burn (Meidias Painter, p. 26, note 2) suggests that this might be a scene of Eros wrestling and cites as a parallel Munich inv. 8926 by the Washing Painter (ARV2 1127, 6 bis; Addenda 332; Schefold, Göttersage, p. 198, fig. 269). For this theme, see E. Simon, AK 15, 1972 [ pp. 20--26], pp. 25--26; LIMC III, 1986, pp. 882--883, s.v. Eros (A. Hermary). If this were the subject of 710, as on the Munich lebes, there should be a hand on the shoulder of Eros and no ball or stone in his hand.

The Meidias Painter (ARV2 1313, 13).
