Title:   Bowl Fragment
Category:   Glass
Description:   Four joining fragments (a-d) preserve nearly half of the floor, with part of the low ring foot; two fragments (e-f) give a little of the plain rim and gently curving wall. A fourth fragment (g) appears to come from the floor. Another fragment (h) from the body of a bowl (?).
Inlaid decoration appears in two places: on the wall, inside, slightly below the rim, a zone of swimming fishes; at the center of the floor, a personage facing. Part of the head of the personage in a high headdress is preserved, also, below at right, part of some object apparently held by the figure. The colors used in the inlay are now white, brown and black.
A broad, low bowl made of heavy molded glass, brilliant blue at the core, the surfaces and also the broken edges now covered with a heavy gray oxidization. This overlies a creamy surface but from the appearance of the broken edges it seems as if this surface also is oxidization. This oxidization does not cover the inlaid decoration.
See the thinness of the inlay, clearly visible in the breaks.
Notes:   R. Smith, 1 August 1958, remarked on the unusual charakter of this work. The inlays were evidently prepared in advance, and inserted into the glass while this was still in a molten condition.
