Title: | Red Figure Lekanis Lid Fragment
Category: | Pottery | |
Description: | About half the lid preserved, with the handle; none of the rim. Around the base of the handle, egg pattern; on the lid standing and seated draped women. Added white, with yellow over, for ornaments in hair, on caskets, and for necklace. Relief contours, very careful, for profiles and napes, and in part of other flesh outlines. The upper parts of four figures preserved; from left to right, woman standing front, looking to her right; she wears a thin Doric chiton, a sakkos and earrings, and holds a box on her outstretched left hand. The second is similarly clad, but her hairband leaves the top of the hair free; she stands front, looks to her left, and holds a ribbon in her outstretched left hand. The third is seated in a chair, facing right; she wears a thin-sleeved chiton, and a bordered cloak over her knees, and earrings; her hairband has three white ornaments at the front. In her right hand she holds one end of a necklace, of which the other end is held by the right hand of the fourth figure, who stands turned slightly to her left, and holds a box on her left hand. She is dressed as the second figure, but with hair ornaments. Good glaze beneath; reserved bands on the top of the handle.
