Title:   Black Figure Oinochoe

Description:   Mended from many fragments. Missing: all the base, top of the handle, front of the lip, and interior pieces (some from figured panel).
The group is of four seated figures: Herakles to the right on a solid stool; Athena next to him, Hermes (staff and petasos) and Dionysos (kantharos), on cross-legged lion-footed stools. Emanating from the right end near Dionysos, a vine which forms filling ornament across the top of the picture. The gods look toward Herakles, Athena and Dionysos twisting back to do so. Good orange ground. White (poorly preserved) for flesh of Athena, hat of Hermes, teeth of Herakles's lion cap and the cord from which his sword hangs, also for ornament on all the garments and for the swivels on the folding chairs. Red for helmet crest, fillet (of Dionysos), beards, garment folds, Herakles's chiton and quiver, and in dots as dress ornament. Red also on the moulded band above the shoulder tongue pattern and on the lower of two above-the-neck lotus-bud ornaments. A pair of narrow bands encircle the vase just below the panel. Glaze thin under lip and on back. Fine fabric.
