Title:   Jug Fragments with Relief Decoration
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Four fragments preserve parts of the wall and shoulder and the base of a round-bodied, narrow-necked jug with ring foot. No join between wall and base fragments. On b) the lower handle attachment. Decoration in applied relief of leaf sprays with berries and tendrils; a small bird perched on one tendril; an ivy leaf under the handle attachment; a ring of small dots around the base of the neck.
ADDENDA Joining fragment added from tin 115 in 1952, serves to unite frags. b) and c).
Description added by JWH in Sept. 2007:
Large parts of both sides of body (part-mended, now restored); whole of base (connection with body fragments now lost). Handle missing except for lower attachment.
Low-bellied plump ovoid body; at top, groove/offset around stump of a narrow neck. Low footring. Fine incisions around body at handle-base at belly and immediately above footring (guidelines for applied elements?).
Clean-textured brown ware (medium thickness, neatly polished). Creamy white slip, yellowish tint in places, from storage (?) covering exterior with drips on interior. Slip ends at base, only splashes on bottom. Neat barbotine decoration (part-moulded, with added dots) covering most of exterior (to bellow belly). Decoration (under the slip): row of dots around neck-base; large downturned ivy-leaf (mould-applied?) on handle-base. Large upright palmette-like leaf-spray (11-leaf(?), with small 'ribbons' tieing base) on belly opposite handle, from which issue slender undulating stems curling around belly, with leaf-sheathes and with curling leaf-sprays and triple berries (part-moulded elements) emerging above and below on slender stems. Rows of tiny barbotine dots applied to some of the leaves. A small bird motif (part-moulded, part-barbotine?), perhaps one of a matching pair, perched on one of the lateral stems.
Unique. Cf. RG barbotine ware series.
Augustan period or a little later (ca. 20 B.C.-20/30 A.D.?). Find context probably pre-AD 40/50.
