Title: | Red Figure Oinochoe
ΤΙΤΛΟΣ: | Oινοχόη με παράσταση δύο ανδρών και κλιβάνου μεταλλουργίας 420 - 400 π.Χ. περίπου
Category: | Pottery | |
Description: | The handle missing and nearly all the lip; two small holes in the wall, and one in the floor; the base much chipped. Plump body; low very slightly flaring ring foot. In a panel bordered above and below by egg and dot bands, at the side by narrow reserved lines, stand two male figures, he at the right, facing left, has a heavy almost grotesque face, a high bald forehead and straggling hair and beard; he wears a straight chiton, reaching to his ankles. It falls in loose folds, is decorated with large stars, and tied by a broad girdle at the waist. His left arm hangs at his side; a chip is missing from the hand, which seems, however, to be empty. His right hand is extended toward the second figure, a boy, wearing a cloak knotted around his waist, and carrying a large sacrificial basket. He has a pointed nose, and wildly straggling locks; the front of his head is bald. Behind the bearded figure, at the right of the scene, is a tall smelting furnace seen from the side; it consists of a shaft with a stepped top, and the hooded fire-hole is clearly rendered. On the ground between the two figures is what appears to be a pile of three flat stones, perhaps a simple anvil. No relief contour. Excellent glaze, somewhat mottled with brown; underside unglazed, thin brown wash inside below neck. The whole somewhat darkened, owing to neighboring cesspool.
