Title:   Red Figure Oinochoe
ΤΙΤΛΟΣ:   Oινοχόη με παράσταση Aθηνάς που ανεβαίνει σε άρμα 410 π.Χ. περίπου
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Most of body, parts of neck, mouth and handle missing; restored in plaster. The profile not certainly complete, but many fragments, joining at the back of the vase, provide an approximation. Round mouth with elaborately profiled lip, tall concave-sided neck, a ridge at its junction with the shoulder; triangular handle, neck to shoulder. Slender ovoid body on elaborately moulded foot. Upper front part of vase entirely missing; nothing preserved of the mastoi.
Reserved: the top of the lip and the upper member of its vertical face; the vertical face of the shoulder ridge, around the front of the vase only; a deep groove around the top of the foot; the vertical face of the foot, and its underside. Unglazed inside.
Ornament: egg and dot around lower member of lip, and at bottom of scene (not continuing around back of vase); tongue pattern on shoulder. Wreath in added clay around neck. No ornament under handle.
Figured scene: Lower left part preserved: figure draped in Doric chiton mounting a chariot right drawn by at least three horses.
Technique: relief contour for the chariot and for the horses' legs; black border on chiton; irregular black to brown brush strokes (suggesting wood?) on edge of chariot floor. Drawing in fine black line, uneven and scratchy.
