Title:   Red Figure Oinochoe Fragment
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Most of the neck and handle and shoulder preserved, mended from several pieces. Two mastoi (one chipped) on shoulder curve at front. Very light moulded ridge at junction of neck and shoulder.
Reserved: space either side of ridge, and the mastoi, these covered with white.
Ornament: on the neck, double palmette and tendril design; on the shoulder, tongue pattern.
Figured scene (vestiges only): at the extreme left, next to the handle, a crested Corinthian helmet, the long end of the plume flying out over a bit of hair and of drapery; below the helmet a trace of the figure's face and of the hair over the brows remains; the figure faces right. Further right, the tip of the goad, painted in added clay. At the center of the vase, between the mastoi, the ears and forelocks of two horses, right. Nothing remains of the scene to the right of the center, but the space is ample to allow for a standing figure before the horses' heads.
Technique: relief contour for the helmet proper; white for a few strokes on the crest; for the palmette heart; for overpainting on the mastoi, and for two bosses on the bridles, these washed with pink. Added clay for the goad.
For the shape cf. P 15840 and P 15841.
