Title:   Red Figure Oinochoe Fragment
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Neck, with part of mouth and shoulder, mended from many pieces; the mouth profile complete. Wide circular mouth with elaborately moulded overhanging lip, its topmost slightly concave face reserved and washed with pink. Broad flat rib at base of neck, this moulding also reserved and washed with pink around the front half of the vase; black behind. Tongue pattern on shoulder. Presumably the neck for an oinochoe of the shape shown by P 15840 and P 15841.
Figured scene: on the neck, archaizing Panathenaic-type Athena. She strides left, her head and her body below the waist seen in profile, her upper body seen from behind. She carries shield and spear; the latter, held in her raised right hand, has heads at both ends of the shaft. Her crested, long-plumed helmet has decorated casque and neck-guard; below the latter her curls escape to the shoulders. The scaled aegis reaches to her waist; her skirt is foldless and tight-fitting, decorated all over with small lightly drawn loops and curved lines and with irregular spirals around the bottom; a broad panel of diamond pattern in black runs from the waist to the top of this hem pattern. The shield has a dotted rim and a central rosette ornament. Relief contour except for the dress; brown wash on shield, helmet and aegis.
Of the scene on the body of the vase, traces only remain: at the extreme right, the curving tips of a kerykeion; to the left of this, the top of its owner's(?) head, left (i.e., Hermes, moving right, looking back left?). Further left, uncertain traces (top of horse's head?). Near the extreme left, a narrow straight-sided object (goad or spear shaft) crosses the field diagonally, its outlines continued across the tongue pattern. Brown curling hair carefully rendered. Relief contours for kerykeion and goad.
