Title: | Bowl Fragments with Relief Decoration
Category: | Pottery | |
Description: | a) Three joining fragments preserve part of the flaring rim with moulded vertical face and of the wall of a deep bowl. Decoration from top to bottom: two light grooves; then a band of egg and dart; then a line of small horizontally placed dart-shaped ornaments. On the wall below, a cluster of ivy leaves and berries suggesting the head of a thyrsos; to the left, part of an uncertain object. b) Small wall fragment, preserving the upper part of a bearded male figure, nude, standing left with a cloak over his left arm and a thyrsos(?) in his left hand. Dionysos? Fine light red clay; excellent dark red glaze. Western Sigillata. ADDENDA "Attributed by Stenico to Gn. Ateius of Arezzo; the figure is identified as Hermes (not Dionysos) identical with that in Dragendorff-Watzinger, Arretinische Reliefkeramik, Beil 2,13, 14, which Stenico attributes to the same Ateius." HAT, letter of March 1, 1971; reference given him by Prof. Howard Comfort of Haverford.
