Title:   Red Figure Skyphos Fragments
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Two non-joining fragments from a skyphos, giving parts of rim and walls. Triptolemos' departure.
a) Most of the central part of the scene is preserved. On the right, lower half of Triptolemos in the chariot, to the left; he holds a phiale in his right hand and is dressed in long-sleeved garment painted white; one snake of the chariot is seen behind Triptolemos' hand. In front of him a large kernos on a table(?); two leaf-like objects on each side of the vase not easily identifiable. A woman (Kore), to right, stands in front of Triptolemos holding a torch in each hand. She wears wreath, earring, necklace, bracelets, peplos (now white); white also for the torches with three once-golden bands. Parts of golden branches are preserved, each on each upper corner of the fragment. Lavish use of gold, of which traces are preserved: on Kore's wreath necklace, upper band of the torch held in the right hand, middle bands of the other; on the phiale, kernos and the left-hand leaf-like object. All those gilded parts have applied clay below the gold. A dot in added clay on the left shoulder of the woman is probably the head of the chiton fibula.
b) Rim fragment; two gilded branches hanging; part of the palmette handle ornament.
Context:   Cut over west outer wall of Square Building; 4th. c. B.C. fill.
