Title:   Red Figure Lebes Fragment
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Pedestal narrow at top tapers to flaring base with moulded edge. Part of the bowl-shaped body is preserved on one side.
Pedestal decorated with two figures, one a woman clad in Doric chiton. Both arms are raised, and each hand holds an oblong casket from which drapery(?) is hanging. The figure is facing left. The other figure is smaller and is perhaps a male swathed in an himation. Base of pedestal decorated with tongue pattern.
The bowl on the stand where it is preserved seems to have a draped figure seated on the ground, right. There are two objects behind this figure, one of which is a conical stand of some sort (basket?). Upper part of figure missing.
Light pink Attic clay. Except for a few places the glaze is light red, an effect apparently due to poor firing.
Crude inferior workmanship.
ADDENDA The figure on bowl described as lying on ground is a Nike, flying left, carrying whatever is to left of her; to left is kalathos with wool balls in added white and legs of a chair, probably for seated woman.
