Title:   Red Figure Cup Fragment

Description:   From center of floor; the spring of the short stout stem preserved beneath; also preserved is the reserved area at the top of the stem, decorated with a dot and a narrow and a broad glazed circle. Mid-part of a nude male figure, from shoulders to thighs, three-quarters front; the extended bent left arm is bound to a diagonal object which passes behind the figure; another such diagonal seen behind the figure at its right: Ixion bound to the wheel.
Relief contour. Excellent glaze.
ADDENDA Assigned by J.D. Beazley to the Hermaios Painter (Athens, 17 May 1958). But by letter (13 Oct. 1958), "I wish I could place the Ixion, an exquisite piece".
