Title:   Black Figure Lekanis Lid Fragments
Category:   Pottery
Description:   About one-fifth preserved of large circular lid, presumably for a lekanis.
Convex top with downturned edge, rim thickened. Inside: poor black glaze, mottled red with reserved circle near center; resting surface also reserved. Decorated on top: two figures on either side of a large skyphoid krater resting on the ground. At left, a bearded nude male faces right, holding in his left hand a long curving object flaring at the end near his hand, done in added white. At right a nude, beardless youth faces left, holding an oinochoe over the krater. Knobbed pole behind him, perhaps a lamp stand. Both men have short hair curling onto neck. Details done with incision. Added red for wreaths on their heads and beard of man on left, and three widely spread lines in interior. Above decorated zone: glazed rays from handle; outside of rim a double band of ivy leaves.
