Title:   Chytridion with Graffiti

Description:   Chips missing from rim otherwise intact.
Form 1 chytra (Agora XXXIII) with rounded underside, rounded body, slightly outturned rim, and strap handle from shoulder to rim, bent to form an angle. Underside wheel-trimmed, with hole pierced through from spike attached to lid IL 2010. Underside covered with incised letters, additional letters on sides and neck. Stylized wreath painted around shoulder of vessel, ca. 3-4 cm. from rim, in red paint.
No sooting on exterior, suggesting that it may never have been used. Iron staining on rim and around hole in underside from lid with spike. Bones of chicken head and feet found in soil within the vessel.
Similar in shape to Agora XXXIII, no. 558=P 4461 (ca. 350-late 290s B.C.), Agora XXIX, no. 1479=P 18583 (300-270 B.C.) and Agora XII, no. 1932=P 6977 (330-305 B.C.).
Notes:   Munsell 5YR 7/4 to 7.5YR 7/4.
Conservation Status:   Finished
Context:   West of Wall 7 in north end of Room M.
Handling:   The red pigment is very friable, please take care not to touch it when handling the vessel!
