| Description: | Fragment of wall and base of a flat-bottomed Samian A bowl. Fairly fine pinkish- brown clay, very micaceous; conspicuous wheel marks on outside and bottom. Inside and out a thick fairly lustrous glaze or paint, creamy-white in color, largely flaked away. Over this the outside of the rim is painted red. Outside of rim seems not to have been slipped before the red was applied. The red on white occurs only under the keel. Clay, fabric and shape are reminiscent of some "Samian" pieces, as is the quality, though not the color, of the glaze. It is quite different from the matte white slip found on some of the early Roman lamps, but the technique of red on white is similar. It is certainly not a locally made bit, and almost certainly "Samian". For profile, cf. P 4528 (Λ 483). | |
