Title:   Black Figure Hydria Fragment
Category:   Pottery
Description:   Lower part only preserved, mended from many fragments; the base, as well as the upper half of the vase, missing. The point where the broad body curves inward to form the shoulder is preserved in the topmost remaining pieces of the panel; probably a hydria: immediately to the right of the panel is the trace of a handle attachment.
On the front a broad rectangular panel, bordered on the sides by a conventionalized ivy band; within is a quadriga seen in front view; the inner horses turn their heads in, the outer horses out; the charioteer stands erect in the chariot, his head turned to his right; the folds of his long chiton are drawn in thin lines of black glaze. Sparing use of incision, save for the horse's heads and the charioteer's right hand, which are more carefully indicated. Remains of added purple(?) on the collars and forelocks of the horses.
Above the foot, a reserved band with rays; the rest of the pot glazed, save for decorated panel.
Pinkish-buff clay. Thin blue-black glaze, much streaked and largely fired to a bright orange-red. Unglazed inside.
