Title:   Stamped Amphora Fragment: Unidentified

Description:   The neck is pushed in by handles at the top, there giving an aval rather than a circular opening. Upper parts of both handles preserved.
Light red clay with some mica in it, and traces of thin slip.
Rectangular stamp on one of the handle.
Notes:   This group (SS 3784-87; SS 3790-3813; SS 3901; P 5524-5536) was found on 17-19 April. This footing trench is 1.00m. wide on the west and 0.73m. on the north, except just as the corner where the north cutting widens to ca. 1.00m. (cf. plan, p. 667); it is 1.62m. deep, from stereo on the west. The upper part of the trench was filled with thrown-in bedrock which had not many sherds in it and no coins. At about 0.67m. from stereo at the bottom the hardpacked bedrock fill ceased; water, and this collection of pottery, with practically no packing about it, appeared. In addition to the catalogued objects there are tins and trays of sherds, the majority similar coarse ware. None of the few glazed bits found need be later than the early third century.
