Title:   Shield Fragment of Athena Parthenos
Category:   Terracotta
Description:   Fragment from lower edge of a model of the shield of the Athena Parthenos.
Preserves at left the greater part of the figure of a dead Amazon; to the left of her feet, a pelta; above her, the feet of Perikles. At the left, the group of a Greek grasping a falling Amazone by the hair is preserved complete except for head and left arm of Amazon.
Since figures are small in relation to the shield, it seems possible that this model contained all the original figures.
Surface worn; unpainted.
Sandy buff-red clay.
