Agora Object: T 3717
Inventory Number:   T 3717
Section Number:   ΜΣ 1240
Title:   Foot of Statue
Category:   Terracotta
Description:   A left foot with traces on underside of attachment to a sandal sole(?).
Broken away above ankle; heel also broken away and surface abraded at many points.
Shallow grooves above the great toe may mark the line of sandal cords. In the middle of the leg is a vertical round hole 12-13mm. in diam. rising at an angle which suggests that the knee was thrust forward. Careful work through out.
The core is of dark buff clay containing a little dark grit. This is surfaced with very fine greenish clay, 1/2 to 2mm. thick; this layer is lightly crazed.
Probably to be associated with series of fragments from terracotta statues found in the neighborhood of South Stoa I; probably akroteria on that building.
Cf. Especially the leg T 3317: similar in clay, in scale, in the central hole and in the shallow surface groove.
Context:   From much disturbed context between Middle and South Stoas.
