Strosis +86.323, discovered on April 22, had several soft spots. One of these at ΟΗ/99 proved to extend under the surface level; Investigating it we found a smooth clay strosis at +86.073, overlain with ash. We began digging through strosis +86.323 (west of Wall #13) using Basket #2. [Finds stamp.]
We found a coin in this fill at ΟΖ/99. In the same fill we found a great quantity of roof tiles, many showing traces of fire, and at ΟΘ-ΟΗ/98-97 a large stone block; These constitute an irregular strosis at approx. +86.189 covering area ΟΣΤ-ΟΘ/99-96 and cut through by Wall #4. Clay level +86.073 appears contemporary with Wall #13, extending to its western face. Thus Wall #13 is earlier than Wall #4; It apparently ends about a meter south of the south face of Wall #4, but its trench extends the rest of the way. Also in this fill were discovered another coin and, at ΟΖ-ΟΗ/99, a Byzantine architectural element.
April 24 (p.39-40)
We began excavating to the north of Wall #4 to learn more about its foundations. Digging the modern fill we discovered an ash-covered strosis along the north face of Wall #4, perhaps the same strosis as the clay level to the south, although a centimeter or two lower. Clay level on the south of Wall #4 has a level of +86.073; that of the north +85.964. [AG-no Basket # associated with this operation, so the information is put here for want of a better place.] [Most of p. 40 is taken up by a second pencil sketch of the excavated area.]
