Notes:   G VIII 2.05- At 2.20 was found a perfect spindle whorl. A second also turned up there.
[p. 208]
G VIII At a depth of 2.20 there is at the S.E end of trench a sort of {bank} of clay harder than that around it and somewhat more red. It is rounded ca. 0.10 thick. Only a small section of circle is preserved. Diam. would be 1.50 or 2.00. N.W. of this i.e. inside is a layer of small stones and clay. Doesn’t look like wall but rather like a filling. Among the stones are quite a number of sherds - some fine Urfirnis some without firniss and some Urfirnis black and red with incised decoration. I am going through the stones at N. end of trench. There are some coarse sherds also. We continue going down to 2.40, where we find stereo. The last few sherds are very coarse or poor.
[p. 349]
G VIII 2.05-2.40 (stereo)
Plain red Urfirnis total 50 sherds. Some are quite well polished. There seems to be coat of paint to give the color. Rather good fabric. Several bases but none raised. [MN: bowl shape]
Plain black Urfirnis 10 or 12 pieces
Plain buff or yellow green, ca. 50 sherds
of these 17 are well polished 33 unpolished or only slightly.

The surface is red and somewhat polished. Incised lines were filled with white.

[Unknown= K fig. 3 no. 5]
[Tzonou-Herbst= Blegen 1921, p. 5, fig. 3, no. 5, EH ware. Stored in basement drawer].
The surface is shiny brown which peels off. White painted incisions. Knob with suspension hole.
The spiral looks like this:
[drawing of a spiral]
1st not 1 line but 2 which eventually join.
3rd piece is like 2nd almost.
[Unknown= K fig. 3 no. 3]
[Tzonou-Herbst= Blegen 1921, p. 5, fig. 3, no. 3, EH ware. Stored in basement drawer].
[James and Nakassis: these numbers do correspond the figures in the Korakou publication, someone has made a note in the Hill House copy stating that no. 3 and no. 5 come from the same vase]
Mat imprints. Part of bottom of a large vessel with mat imprint. Coarse red ware.
Obsidian 2 pieces
Spindle whorls 2.
[drawings of two spindle whorls]

Trench G. VIII 2.05-2.40 (stereo)
Urfirnis Redsurfaced usually pretty well polished. Color runs from a deep dark red (almost maroon) to a light orange red. I think it is due to applied paint or varnish (Urfirnis) in most cases. Though some sherds look as if coloring is due to firing and burnishing.
[MN= 50 sherds]
[AddN= Firing defective]
[James and Nakassis= presumably this AddN refers to vases whose coloring is due to firing and not paint]
The fabric is rather fair clay often gritty usually fairly thin and the sherds have a good feel. Shapes: There are 3 or 4 bottoms of pots. All come down flat on the ground. I see no raised bases. Wide open bowls with incurving lips are typical.
[MN: Some are black inside and red outside others are red inside and black outside]
Black surfaced Only 10 sherds. These are in general inferior to the redsurfaced not so well polished. Color runs from black to black brown. The paint is thinner and seems to flake off more easily. 3 sherds have a fairly good glaze one of them is highly polished. 1 sherd has a brown almost transparent wash.
Along with this Urfirnis are 50 sherds of plain buff apparently unpainted 7 sherds of these are polished. Good fabric. The color is generally yellowish buff. Some of these sherds resemble the fabric of plain beaked jugs from prehistoric graves at Old Corinth.
12 bases all flattened type. none raised
