Notes:   North of the threshold stone in the face of the bluff we are going down to lower levels. Here is a floor level (0.70 below top of threshold) bounded by two narrow walls. Down to this level (for about 0.40) we find chiefly Minyan.
[James-Nakassis: the top of the threshold block is at most 0.40 m below ground level, as the block was exposed in the first basket of trench R, which stopped at 0.40 m (see NB 81, B44). The floor level would then be at most 1.10 m below ground level. The starting elevation of the next basket of 1.05 m below ground level, where CWB announces that he is digging deeper to the east. These numbers are close enough to suggest plausibly that the top of the threshold block is ca. 0.35 m below ground level, and this and the following two baskets take this area down ca. 0.65 m, from 0.40 m to ca. 1.05 m below ground level. This basket is below B44, but not below B55, 56 or 62.]

R II 0.40-0.65 (3 trays sherds very numerous)
LM III Mycenaean. Great quantity painted and unpainted. Typical late LM III. A few better sherds (N.B. one black on buff with rows of white dots on black design). Great majority painted. Shapes same as above. One large bowl from here.
Hieratic vessel. Wheelmade of reddish pink clay. Sort of hydria shape rather large 1 vert. and 2 horiz. handles top preserved but lower half missing. Covered with a coat of paint which looks like Urfirnis (?) Numerous sherds of same kind from other sim. pots. Fairly thin fabric.

Mattmalerei 6 sherds (of 2 kinds) black on buff and purplish black on polished buff.
Urfirnis black wash 2 sherds. 2 other coarse sherds with careless daubs.
