Stratum: | R, north of threshold (= R IV)
Notes: | North of the threshold stone in the face of the bluff we are going down to lower levels. Here is a floor level (0.70 below top of threshold) bounded by two narrow walls. Down to this level (for about 0.40) we find chiefly Minyan. [James-Nakassis: the top of the threshold block is at most 0.40 m below ground level, as the block was exposed in the first basket of trench R, which stopped at 0.40 m (see NB 81, B45). The floor level would then be at most 1.10 m below ground level. The starting elevation of the next basket of 1.05 m below ground level, where CWB announces that he is digging deeper to the east. These numbers are close enough to suggest plausibly that the top of the threshold block is ca. 0.35 m below ground level, and these three baskets take this area down ca. 0.65 m, from 0.40 m to ca. 1.05 m below ground level. This basket is below B64.] [p. 367] R IV lower level = ca. 0.85-1.05 Minyan 55 sherds incl. 1 ringed base mostly dark kind Black polished 9 sherds Mattmalerei 12 sherds black on buff Urfirnis (poor wash and fairly coarse) 6 sherds Plain and chiefly coarse local 15 sherds
