[MN: pt 1 here is 0.18 west of pt 9 p. 233]
Points 1 and 2 are cut on wall. We are leaving wall but removing hearth.
[p. 242]
The potsherds in hearth in S are chiefly coarse. There are 2 or 3 sherds of Minyan.
[James-Nakassis: It is unclear whether the hearth belongs to S IV (B 90) or S V (B 96). B90 certainly exposes the hearth, and in his description of this basket, CWB declares that "This hearth is made of stones, broken sherds, etc. set in clay above pebbles and covered with clay. Baked hard by fire on top. I am getting a photograph of it and will then take it out. In level it belongs to bottom of S IV = 1.25 deep." Thus, it is possible that CWB excavated down to the pebbles, and the hearth protrudes above them, and thus belongs to B90, as he explicitly says. However, CWB describes the removal of the hearth under his description of B96. Thus, perhaps the top of the hearth was exposed by B90 but the hearth itself belongs to B96. This discrepancy is difficult to resolve; I tend to favor it belonging to B90, since he clearly describes the hearth as set in clay ABOVE pebbles, which he presumably exposed with B90; this is consistent with Blegen's general desire to expose features by digging around them. In this interpretation, his inclusion of the hearth with B96 would be a mistake (perhaps he forgot that the hearth belonged to B90 because of the intervening attention he paid to trench L?). We hope that examining the photographs of the hearth taken by CWB will solve the problem.]
