Stratum:   Deposit east of Wall 190. Dark brown slightly silty clay with 10% medium to large pebbles
Notes:   B89 was dug to try to follow the dark brown earth visible under 83. The boundary with the redder earth to the east is clear. B89 follows boundaries very close to those of B83. The soil of B89 is also very similar to that of B83, being a dark brown silty clay with 10% medium to large pebbles; however, B89 lacks the cobbles found B83. These two baskets were easy to distinguish in the scarp of the Archaic cutting by the cobbles in the higher level.
B89 comes down on a flat level of dark brown earth with many small inclusions of yellow ochre. Basket 89 may be the same as Basket 79 on the west side of the Wall 190, which had a similar soil composition and ended on a very similar level.
B89 was dug in two passes: a first shallow pass with a small pick and a second deeper pass with a big pick, finished off with the small pick and a broom.
