Stratum:   Fill of well, reddish-brown sandy clay, loose, damp, 10% pebbles and occasional large rocks.
Notes:   B3 is the continuation of the fill of well 2002-2, after an arbitrary basket change after B2 had been dug for 50 cm. The earth is the same, but perhaps a bit damper, and there are still the occasional large rocks of B2, as well as sherds tiles and cement chunks. The sherds are fewer though and more worn than the previous basket. New measurements put into practice and new top plan drawn. A limestone block is recovered, and then a large limestone slab (about 70x50x20 cm.). There is also 5% charcoal now, but the same reddish-brown sandy clay as before. Today (May 13, 2005), three more limstone blacks all about the same size as the first of this basket (about 30x20x10 cm.). There are lots of tiles but fewer sherds and smaller ones. Baskets 2 and 3 are very similar, for their small sherds, few in number, and many large limestone slabs and blocks. The pottery of B2 contains mostly 6th c. sherds, with only a few third century and it may be that these baskets will represent a transition in the well, or the lowest level of the dumped third century material. Two more limestone blocks came up, making a total of 6 from this level, all about 30x20x10 cm., plus the large slab. The rocks make it harder to maintain the 50 cm. basket depth, so after keeping 1/3 for the wet sieve and dry sieving the other 2/3s, we changed baskets after approximately 65 cm.
