Corinth Basket: NB976 B17 P43
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   NB976 B17 P43
Area:   Panaghia north
Category:   Basket/zembil
Notebook:   976
Context:   17
Page:   43
Date:   2006/04/28
Stratum:   fill N of wall 215; reddish-brown, loose soil, poorly sorted with 30% inclusions
Notes:   Basket 17 is most likely a continuation of Basket 16. However, due to the exposure of the well-head blocks, the change in soil in the SE part of the trench, and the fact that we removed ca. 10 cm in Basket 16, we changed baskets and are focusing on the W portion of the trench. Tile and plaster are present. We have found iron, bone, marble, and glass--very similar to Basket 16's finds. There is part of the fill over the well. Given the different color of the area to the S and E of the well-head, we may have evidence of 2 different fills. We have also found painted plaster fragments and mosaic. We are continuing with basket 17 on 3 May 2006. the fill seems to continue down quite a bit and the appearance of the trench has changed considerably. There are no stones on the W and N sides of the "well": these stones were robbed out. In scraping the W scarp, we noticed NO change in soil below the greyish-brown layer (baskets 8 and 9) confirming our suspicions of a deep layer of fill. In scraping down the W bulk of the area directly to the E of basket 17, we noticed inclusions (tile and plaster) similar to what we are getting in basket 17. We suspect this area to be similar to soil excavated in the west. We are stopping basket 17 at an arbitrary point, although we are noticing fewer inclusions 15-20%
Note that the S limit of basket 17 is arbitrary and does not indicate a soil change or cut.
