Stratum:   mixed fill N of wall 215; mix of darker and redder reddish-brown, loose silty soil with 5% inclusions
Notes:   Basket 24 is the removal of mixed fill in which the darker and the redder soils are intermixed and have similar inclusions. Tile, plaster, and scattered bits of charcoal are present. We are coming upon a compact surface of yellow clay; this clay surface is the same surface found in baskets 20 and 22. The closer we approach the compact surface, the fewer number of tiles; instead we are getting chunks of plaster interspersed among the soil. We are curious how the compact yellow (marl) clay surface relates to wall 215. We have found 1 coin, bronze, iron, glass, painted plaster and bone. We are not coming down on the compact yellow surface E of 405.5. Re: the "well head": while we originally believed the well head to have been installed in the 6th c. we now believe it to be earlier. If the well head was indeed 6th c. we would have found a robbing trench or a foundation trench which we have not. Therefore it seems that the well head was installed prior to the 6th c. and then the ear was churned up. We are currently trying to determine the relationship between the hard clay "floor" surface and the surrounding fill so we are sweeping the entire area and A215 in an attempt to make things clearer. We had thought that perhaps the yellow compact clay layer extended out to the north. However, we now thing that this may be an isolated patch of this matrix so we are trying to figure out how to proceed.
