Stratum:   fill N of wall 215; brownish and reddish-brown soil with inclusions of pebbles and cobbles as well as plaster.
Notes:   We are finding plaster and some marble revetment. We have also make 2 notable finds: 1 terracotta leg and a lamp discus with the head of Athena. We are also trying to determine the relationship between this area and the more red area to the east. It seems like the same save for the fact that the soil in this basket has been exposed for several days. After a pass had been taken over the area left uncovered by B17, we have continued this basket to include the reddish-brown area to the east and around the well head. There is some plaster as well as some large pieces of tile. We found 4 coins, one bone pin. The well has been more fully exposed in the course of this basket. The well head is a large limestone block, shaped like a gamma. Along the southern edge it measures 1.2m long and on the east side 0.83m long and looks to be about 40 tall. It also appears to be broken on the NW and SW edges. We have taken several passes over the whole trench (except for the yellow clay layer) and the soil remains the same: reddish-brown and slight more red towards the SE. There are roof tiles and plaster inclusion and we are using the big pick. The soil in B27 seems to cut the yellow clay "floor" so we are taking this out first. We are coming upon some architectural blocks to the W of the "well head" and a preliminary look at them shows (a possible) orientation with other features in Panaghia field [i.e. the drain and the "well head" block]. More of these blocks need to be exposed however. It looks like these blocks for the W (bottom) half of the "well head" are on axis with the sewer drain S of W215 (see description p. 70). The "well head" is now rectangular in shape with a central opening. We are getting more shells as we excavate [i.e. 1 measured 19 by 9]. A water channel has just been discovered directly to the E of the well head. We are stopping this basket at an arbitrary point.
