Name:   NB976 B39 P90
Area:   Panaghia north
Category:   Basket/zembil

Context:   39

Date:   2006/05/12
Stratum:   mixed fill N of wall 215; reddish brown sandy soil, slightly compacted with 20% inclusions, including small cobbles and tile
Notes:   B39 is a large operation with the intent to reduce this area of the trench to the same elevation as NB 977 B45 on the east. Two teams of workmen used big picks throughout this basket. Since the area to the W and E of this basket had been excavated and shown to be mixed fill, this seemed a reasonable action to take.
The soil was fairly uniform with some redder and blacker patches, all contained some tiles and wall plaster. It revealed some of the lower stones of wall 278.
N.B. B40 should have been dug before B39, it was therefore dug out of sequence. Once B 40 was removed the soil beneath it was the same as B39 and digging continued in that basket to include this new area.
N.B. The topsoil was not cleaned before excavation began and therefore may contain some contaminated material.
The areas excavated as NB 967 B39 and B40 and NB 977 B5 were not dug as part of this basket as they were already quite low, a strip was left along the N side of wall 215.
It appears that B38 was cut into this stratum on the north.
