Corinth Basket: NB976 B65 P145
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   NB976 B65 P145
Area:   Panaghia north
Category:   Basket/zembil
Notebook:   976
Context:   65
Page:   145
Date:   2006/05/23
Lot:   Lot 2006-009
Stratum:   pit fill N of wall 215; dark blackish-brown, loose, silty sandy, poorly sorted soil with 40% inclusions of tile and cobbles
Notes:   1 boulder ca. 30 cm. long was found. Many Corinthian tiles are present (count=245 tiles, weight=87.90 kg)), along with bronze and iron slag, vitrified material/glass, and scattered bits of charcoal. We also found a conglomeration with stones that probably supported a roof tile (s), ca. 15 cm. long. There is no plaster present. We are sieving all soil with 1 out of 5 zembils being water-sieved. We are wondering if this pit joins with NB 979 pit 2006-01, S of wall 215. Basket 65 seems most compatible with NB 979 Basket 7 (pg. 11) in color, composition, and finds (iron, bronze, and charcoal). NB 979 Basket 7 does not, however, have much--if any--tile present. We are coming down upon a very black ashy layer with burnt pottery in the SW corner of the pit. 5 painted plaster fragments were found in this basket; this total is suspicious and may have fallen in while excavating form the top or sides of the pit--where painted plaster is ubiquitous. Excavating the fill of the pit has revealed a large boulder lining its E side. This boulder was noticed under the martyr after Basket 57. The pit seems to run under it. We stopped this basket at an arbitrary point as we have gone down a considerable amount (ca. 63 cm.). The pit has been numbered 2006-03.
