This soil is medium blackish brown sandy silt with rare inclusions of pebbles of all sizes. It may be a vegetable patch. Another large stone was found in the patch at 411.64E, 973.33N, 91.81 H (part of wall 291). Pieces of painted plaster were found on top of the stone.
The soil south of 975N and west of 411.75 was a bit softer, but of the same soil at basket 19, so we continued with that basket.
NE of the stone were a few small pieces of charcoal (not saved).
An alternate theory the director offered is that this is an exploratory trench for stone to rob out for the city wall possibly west of here.
The area of softer earth mentioned above bottomed out and the earth W of it became harder and redder. Thus we closed basket 19. The final elevation of the level ranged from 91.70 to 91.82.
For planting trench records cf NB 967 B49-51 pp.126 plan.
