Stratum:   Removal of layer on top of drain exits
Notes:   The matrix of this basket is a lightly cemented medium brown sandy silt with 10% cobble inclusions. B50 is the removal of a layer of sandy silt and cobbles that is obscuring the potential exit of the water junction amphora. It is expected that removing the crust will allow for investigation of cuts for the drain pipe trench, it it does go through the amphora. The deposit stretches over much of the area to the S of the amphora, between the extension of W271 and the N baulk. The column drum was removed during this basket. It had been noted that the drum was tapering from top to bottom, and was therefore placed upside down. When it was removed the top side revealed a different cut compared to the embolon on the other. It basically featured a central square embolon similar to the other one, but also two smaller rectangular cuts on either side of it that seem to be approximately 0.11 m deep. The function of these two long cuts could be for some kind of a system that would keep a beam with a square shaft in place so that it can rotate the column drum. It is therefore believed that this column drum was in a second use as a millstone, as it was originally thought to be. The deposit that is attached to the S side of the newly discovered part of W271 is of a more clayey consistency than the rest of B50 and it is therefore left for another basket. The pass showed the course of the N/S gutter as it curves around the amphora to the W before edging to the SSE. Portions of both the E and W sides of it appear to be preserved to the N and to the SW of the amphora, though there is a gap in the cement lining N of the amphora (B34) where the pit of B39 and B41 was dug and potentially to the extension of the water pipe trench into the amphora.
