Stratum:   Fill of the water pipe trench S of the amphora.
Notes:   The matrix of this basket is loose to compact sandy silt, medium brown with angular chunks of pink stone. B52 is the removal of the soil that seems to be within the limits of the water pipe trench. It is believed that the water pipe trench is later than the gutter and thus it is explored first, although this cannot be said with certainity until we find the spot where the two intersect. Five segments of water pipe have been revealed which are of a greater diameter than the one exposed just to the S of the amphora. The series of pipe segments are intact and bisect the course of the gutter. Within the matrix of the water pipe trench fragments of cement and what appears to be chips of the stone that W271 is made of are found. Also a few fragments of plaster that seem to be similar to the ones that are part of the lining of the walls and the floor of the gutter were found, right around the area where the water pipe intersects the gutter. The soil of this basket was dry is dry sieved.
