Stratum:   Pit fill. Stratum is dark yellowish brown silty clay with 5 % cobbles and 15% pebbles, loose.
Notes:   B 17 is the continuation of the removal of the fill from Pit 2006-01. I suspect that there is no difference between B 17 and B 9, and in fact B 7 might also be the same. There are large pockets of carbon and ash in the soil matrix, just as in B 7. The soil is also quite dark. We determined today that Pit 2006-01 most likely cut the foundation trench (to the east- against Wall 289) and we observed on the eastern side of Wall 289 that the foundation trench is quite wide. Also, while the soil of B 7 (in the eastern portion) was indeed part of B 7, it was slightly looser and darker in the eastern edge, right against walls 215 and 289. That is probably because it overlay the foundation trench B 16. Also, there was a pronounced lip between Pit 2006-01 and B 16. We sieved 80% and reserved 20% for the water-sieve. The large pockets of carbon tended to cluster near Pit 2005-01. We found another odd piece: what appears to be an amphora handle in coarse clay. We found one in B 6, which is why we now think that B 6 is the messy top of Pit 2006-01. (We called it a waster on pg. 10). We stopped excavating B 17 as a basket when we were unable to keep the excavated soil within Pit 2006-01. Instead it had to be pushed down into the bottom of Pit 2005-01, where it was contaminated. Therefore, we began a cleaning basket (B 18). Found bronze, iron and bone. See pg. 29 for a section at c. 967.50. See pg. 30 for a sketch of the amphora handle. See pg. 30 for top plan.
