Notes:   With B55 we return to the reddish brown N Cut, which appears to cut into the brown earth of the pipe trench. We begin by removing the strip of gravel and rocky brown earth left at a slightly higher el. Than the surrounding Cut earth, which runs around it. The rocky brown portion was quickly dug through; the gravelly portion extended to a considerably greater depth before stopping. This gravel patch runs into the N scarp, and appears to run W below the reddish brown earth of the N cut.
