Stratum:   foundation trench for wall 294; dark to medium brown, loose, silty, poorly sorted soil with 10% inclusions of medium pebbles and cobbles
Notes:   6 fragments of tile were found. This soil runs up to wall 294 and covers a hacked out/disturbed part of wall 291, phase 1. The N part of wall 294 was built on top of part of wall 291, phase 1; leveling courses of tile form wall 294 overly limestone of 291, phase 1. An articulated kantharos sherd was found resting directly against wall 294. We suspect Basket 1 relates to a thin strip of soil further S on the E side of wall 294; these soils match in color, consistency, and composition. This thin strip was discovered while digging NB 976 Basket 79; the red soil of Basket 79 sheared away from the brown soil of the strip. Basket 1 and the thin strip are part of the foundation trench for wall 294; this trench is cut into the soil of NB 976 Basket 79.
