Stratum:   Lens of debris in a semi-compacted, brownish red silty sand, cobbles, some boulders, tile, and brick. 10%-40% inclusions
Notes:   Basket 29 is devoted to a raised area near the southeast corner of the trench. There are several jagged stones protruding above the surface. The area also contains roof tiles and at least one red brick (visible). The soil has less clay content than surrounding fill. To improve our sample we are dry sieving a zembil of the fill. We sieved 2 zembils without significant finds so we stopped sieving.
As we began clearing this section, more stones and debris appeared. It doesen't look to be a pit at this early stage but it has a hard edge at the NW edge of the basket. We are diggin it further down, pulling out the top layer of rubble. Some pieces of pottery were embedded half in harder fill, half in softer fill at the SW edge of the basket, suggesting that it is not a discrete feature. We did remove the upper layer of rubble (angular cobbles and boulders, mud-brick, tiles) in very loose fill, leaving the large boulder and a martyr (for the top level) in case this is part of a destruction debris that extendss over the whole area. We closed the basket before digging too deep, since it revealed more layers of rubble that seemed to run under the clayey soil elsewhere.
