Stratum:   Foundation trench for Walls 290, 294. Loosely compacted reddish brown sandy silt with 20% small cobbles, tiles.
Notes:   With this basket we are taking the wall 294 and 291 foundation trenches, which are contiguous. The fill is moderately compact and contains much pottery on top, although less appears further down. We are sieving the fill. The trench bottoms out on a variety of different soils near the base of the large wall blocks on the Hellenistic levels, so it's clearly the base of the foundation trench. It appears that Hellenistic blocks are incorporated into the foundations, since they are on the line with wall 271 (although shifted N) and there are sections filled with cobbles. For wall 294, a hardened console of earth appeared under the top at the foundation trench cut at N974,25 - 975,15 (elevation 90,94). So we left this fill for another basket (39), in case it has some reelationship to the pit/trench to the N (B36).
