Stratum:   Fill cut into by foundation trench to W289 to the west, W215 to the N, NB974 B51 to the south. Reveals a clay floor underneath. Medium reddish brown, 50% pebbles, 10% cobbles, loose to compact.
Notes:   B10 is a strip of fill cut into by the foundation to W289 and running from the cut for the castellum drain to W215. In B8, we found two patches of fill, but it is difficult to tell which cuts which. Some scraping on the line suggests that the west strip cuts that to the east, so we dig this first. At first, we see large patches of clay. The clay reveals itself in a large circa 50cm round area at the bottom of our trench. Eventually, it appears that this is a clay floor. The clay layer extends all the way north to W215 and west to W289. We can also clearly pick it out in the scarp of the castellum drain basket, ass it extends quite some ways under overlying soil. We will remove this soil and explore the extent of the clay floor, but first we need to scrape down the castellum drain to ensure that no Roman contamination falls into our floor baskets. We sieve 20% of the soil. Moreover, it appears that this clay floor runs into the foundation trench (B9) and most likely under wall 289, we cannot howwever find it in the scarp on the west side of the wall. At the baskets end, Guy Sanders suggests that the exposed clay may indeed be a second, higher floor above that visible in the scarp. Found iron, loom weight with delta, dog figurine. See top plan pg. 21.
