Stratum:   Fill east of wall 289, cut into by castellum drain (NB974 B51-2). Medium reddish brown sandy clay 30% pebbles, 10% cobbles, loose. Muddy from rain.
Notes:   B8 isa patch of fill adjacent to the cut for the castellum drain to the south and W289 to the west. It has rained significantly since we started this morning, and though this patch is at a distinct elevation, it is difficult to differentiate soils anymore. As this patch approaches W289, a little more of the cut for the foundation trench of said wall is revealed, and we will excavate this next. This is interesting to note as where the drain for the castellum exposes lower courses of W289 than where we are digging, no blocks of W289 are seen below the course next to which B8 sits. A foundation trench would suggest, however, that there is a lower course of W289 which is absent in the area across which the castellum drain cuts (as if rocks were removed from the lower courses for the later castellum construction). The line of a cut to the east of this basket seems to continue, dividing the fill north of the castellum drain and south of W215 into an east and west area. But before examining this we will excavate the exposed foundation trench. See top plan pg. 18.
