Notes:   Basket 17 was defined as a small area just east of the hearth which was identified by a difference in soil at the end of Basket 16. This soil was lighter in color than the surrounding soil matrix; the soil was a light grey-brown and was different than the ashy like layer removed in Basket 16. Basket 17 removed a number of cobble to boulder sized stones in the SW part of the basket. These stones were previously thought to form the eastern boundary of the hearth. However, it is now clear that these stones formed part of the fill of this basket which cut into the eastern edge of the hearth. Other inclusions in the basket included several large mudbrick chunks and bone. An adecite block was found and this seems to be the upper slab of a hopper mill, which are common in the Hellenistic period. The basket was closed after all of the grey-brown soil was removed. The basket also defined more of the northern wall of cistern 2006-01, that is wall 298. At the end of basket 17, a darker brown soil was identified north of basket 17 and this soil was then removed in basket 18. Basket 18 suggests another cutting with fill in this area and together with the fill of basket 17 there is strong evidence of multiple disturbances of the eastern edge of the hearth and the area immediately to the east and northeast.
