| Stratum: | Interface. Light yellowish brown. Fine grained soft, 5-10% inclusions very poorly sorted with medium to coarse pebbles. Silty sand. | |
| Notes: | Basket 22 removed the brown layer uncovered by baskets 19, 20 and 21. The basket was directly undernearth basket 21 and this basket seems to have formed part of the foundation for the hearth. The southern limit of the basket was defined by the southern hearth stones and the northern edge of the basket extended to wall 297. After the basket was completed, three different areas showed soil distinctions. Ashy soil was observed in the NW bottom of the basket, red soil was apparent in the eastern basket part and a greyish-brown soil with chunks of clay appeared in the middle of the basket bottom. Furthermore, there were a number of cobble sized stones at the middle of the basket within the grey-brown like soil which turned up a the completion of the basket. Small finds were limited however an iron nail was found as well as two coins. The first was found at E411.23, 976.83, el. 90.89 and the second coin appeared at E410.99, N977.00 and el 90.90. The removal of this basket revealed that there were roof tiles, serving as a leveling coarse, underneath the hearth boundary stones. It is unclear if the middle rocks at the bottom of this basket are the top of the fill or part of a lower foundation for the hearth. | |
