Stratum:   Feature removal and fill, very dark, yellowish-brown, silty, 10% inclusions, poorly sorted, pebbles and cobbles
Notes:   Pass to remove the stone channel revealed by basket 30. We removed this feature in order to better define the edges of the pit excavated in baskets 17-20. At the close of this basket we had a well defined southern edge of this pit. The basket revealed a small amount of pottery as well as several chunks of pebble mosaic, marble revetment, and painted wall plaster. The southern edge of the pit was covered by the stone channel and is semi-circular in shape. We also removed a single architrave block perhaps from an anta (L. 0.50, W. 0.35, H. 0.34). This block preserves a single fascia cutting crowned by a sima reversa molding on 3 sides. We stopped the basket when we reached the closing level of basket 30. This stratum appears to be the same as that at the close of basket 20. Because of this, we hope to bring the pit down to a single level and excavate the pit as a single unit. Some cement was removed from the stone channel and the block directly to the south of it, suggesting the two were at one time connected.
