Stratum:   Votive deposit of miniature vases in a depression with ash and charcoal west of W302. Light greyish brown, moderately compacted silty sand with 30% poorly sorted pebbles and cobbles.
Notes:   This deposit was revealed during the excavation of B56 when a miniature lamp was found at the south edge of the scarp. After exposing the extent of the basket/stratum we discovered that it was a roughly circular depression containing at least 20 complete or mostly complete miniature vessels and numerous fragments along with significant quanitites of ash and charcoal. At the edge (NE) of the depression was an amphora toe, labeled 12 in the field drawing by James Herbst, which we later realized was outside of the cut of the pit and belongs with B56. The vessels and other objects appear to have been placed haphazardly in the depression, but the more complete vessels were on top and more fragmentary at the bottom. Based on the joins made post excavation it appears that either some of the vessels were broken and then placed in the pit or they broke when they were placed in the pit because some clean sherds joined to ones that were blackened, likely through contact with the burnt wood that was found at the bottom of the pit. The first objects to be removed and thus were in the upper layer of the deposit, were the lamp (L-07-2), a hydria (#2=C-07-6), a krater (#3=C-07-7), part of a pedestalled saucer (#4=#8=C-07-11) and a small bronze ring. At the time of initial excavation all identifiable objects, even if fragmentary, were given a number which corresponds to the field drawing. These numbers are different from the inventory numbers as joins were found post-excavation, see concordance p. xxx.
After the whole deposit was exposed we could see that the upper layer also contained: a miniature goblet (#5=C07-8) on the south side, a spouted saucer (#6=C-07-9), an amphora (#7=C-07-10), part of the pedestalled saucer (#8=#4), a one-handler (#9=C-07-12) and a trefm oinochoe (#10=C-07-13). Vessels 8-10 formed a cluster. On the E side lay a ceramic spoon (#11=C-07-14), and a kotyle (#13=C-07-15). The vessels of the next layer were more fragmentary. Here a basket (#14=#18=C-07-16), a phiale (#15=C-07-17), a hydria (#16=C-07-18), a kanoun (#20=C-07-19), a plate (#21=C-07-20) and a saucer with handle (#22=C-07-21) were found.
Other vessels were found in the mending process and changed some of the field numbering and/or were assigned inventory numbers only in the museum. The additional vessels are: C-07-22 (one handler), C-07-23 (cup), C-07-24 (saucer with flange), C-07-25 (pestle), C-07-26 (goblet).
All soil from the deposit was saved for sieving and analysis. All possible measurements were taken, see p. 192.
At the bottom of the deposit there was a lot of thick black ash, many small pieces of charred wood and one large piece.
The depresssion was very clearly cut into the pebbly brown soil of B59 and its S edge was interrupted by the construction of the diamond tile pool (or possibly by our own cleaning of that scarp). Over top of the deposit was a layer of white clayey soil that continued under the pebble floor associated with W302. Thus it is possible that this votive deposit is a foundation deposit associated with the construction of the large Hellenistic building in Panayia North.
