Title:   Room 5 - 48 is fill of pit 53
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1111
Context:   48
Date:   2016/06/06
Stratum:   25% stone; 10% coarse pebbles, 5% cobbles, 5% medium pebbles; 15% tile; 3% roots
Description:   The soil color is dark reddish black. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   - 48 is more compact and reddish than 46.
- Remove black and soft soil to uncover reddish and yellowish clay underneath, which is more compact. In SE corner remains of a built structure with tiles, nicely put, and arranged in a semi-circle abutting the corner of walls. The structure is possibly a pit, but more excavation is needed.
- Pit is lined with stones on E. and S. sides; these are adjacent to the built tile in the SE corner.
- Excavation of fill revealed two boulders in the middle of pit.
- Some ash revealed in SE corner of pit.
- Boulders removed from pit.
- As excavation of pit continued, earth slightly siltier further down, with fewer stones and tile.
- After excavation of fill 48, it becomes apparent that there may be an intentional built structure revealed in SE corner; this is characterized by tiles lined with stones and clay.
- After excavation of fill, it seems that underneath the fill, clay is only present in SE corner of pit; center and N. and W. sides of pit still characterized by loose, silty soil, with numerous cobble and tile inclusions, that seems to extend down to lower elevation than area with clay in SE corner. Excavation was therefore stopped here, because boundary of pit became diffuse.
