Corinth Basket: New Apotheke: D. Kokolopoulos and E. Lambraki Field, context 4
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   New Apotheke: D. Kokolopoulos and E. Lambraki Field, context 4
Area:   New Apotheke: D. Kokolopoulos and E. Lambraki Field
Title:   Room 1 - Fill of cut 9 (Pit)
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1111
Context:   4
Date:   2016/05/30
Stratum:   Large rock chunks including some marble, some tile and ceramic sherds, most of which form part of a large pithos.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is very dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   We opened this context directly beneath context 1, marked by the end of the dense tile concentration seen in context 1, as well as a change in soil composition to a darker, finer silt. This context included several more fragments of the pithos found in context 1, as well as several large chunks of rock. Two examples measured 20 x 21 x 12 and 18 x 5 cm. We found one nearly complete tile measuring 0.39 x 0.24 (at widest point). One bone pail and four pottery pails. A fragment of a stone mortar (MF-2016-44 VOID, New Apotheke 3) or basin was also found and brought to the museum to be inventoried [Note: to be inventoried by Ephoreia], along with three nails, and a sherd of glass (p.L. 0.03). At the bottom of this context the earth became much harder and slopes downwards toward the center. This suggested that it comprised the fill of a pit (context 9). Two pieces of marble were found, the larger one measuring 0.15 x 0.09. Also possible threshold stone fragment.
5/31 The following day we continued context 4; soil was the same and some big pieces tiles, nearly complete, were uncovered. Stones uncovered were often partly worked-- perhaps suggesting that they were once part of (or intended for) a wall. More of the southern end of the cistern was exposed, and context 4 continues under the cistern. We halted excavation in this context because it was impracticable to continue beneath the cistern. Another complete tile was collected from this context as well (both tiles kept and brought to Pietri).
